Tom Westerberg
Tom Westerberg is a graduate of Salado High School and Texas A&M University. He has been married to Sandra for 41 years, and they have three children and two grandchildren. Two of their children have followed Tom into public education, and the third served our country in the Air Force.
Tom started his coaching career at Cameron Jr. High in 1987. He was hired by Joe Martin in 1988, and coached under Joe’s leadership at Lake Dallas High School, Mabank High School, Garland High School, and finally at Allen High School. As an assistant coach, Tom coached football, basketball, girls and boys track, soccer, and golf. In 2004, he was hired as the head football coach at Allen High School where he served for 12 years in that capacity. In 2016, Tom was named the head football coach and athletic director of Barbers Hill High School. He was then hired at Hays CISD in 2021 to start their athletic department and served for one year as the athletic director. Coach Westerberg finished his coaching career in his hometown of Salado before retiring in January of 2024 after 37 years of service in public education.
During Tom’s coaching career, he was a part of five football state championship teams: one as an assistant at Garland High School in 1999, and four as the head coach at Allen High School in 2008, 2012, 2013 and 2014. While he was the athletic director at Barbers Hill, the baseball and softball teams won state championships in 2021. As a head coach, he coached in several All-Star games including the Oil Bowl, the Under Armor All-American Game, the USA Football vs. Canada game, and the Bayou Bowl. Tom also had the distinct honor of coaching the Gatorade National Player of the Year, Kyler Murray, in 2014.
Tom has mentored and guided several assistant coaches on his staff to become head coaches. He is also proud of the many former players that have chosen to lead a life of service in the teaching/coaching profession. Over the many years of his head coaching and AD career, Tom has hired many successful men and women in all sports. He looks forward to continuing to mentor and guide young coaches.
